Lucky Luke From Colorado

Rodney got a Palm Beach Slam on artificial! So my repeat client from Colorado Luke came down for a visit and decided to bring his father in law Rodney out for a night. Rodney is a bass fisherman so I knew he would be good with the light tackle we use. Prior to the trip I set him up with one of our spin rigs with a DOA paddle tail on an 1/8th oz jig head, but shortly after we headed out I noticed a bunch of shrimp jumping around and being chased by predator fish. I quickly switched him over to a 1/2 oz DOA shrimp in a glow color. A few casts later and Rodney hooked up a tarpon that jumped 3 times and shook the hook loose. Then on the next cast again another tarpon jumped and shook the hook! I think it happened about 5 times before we finally got a hook to stick and landed the one in the picture.

For some reason we couldn’t get them to eat a fly that night. Anyways, the bite slowed down after we landed that fish so we moved on to some snook. A few spots later they both landed a few and I wanted to see if we could get Rodney the slam so we went to see if the jacks were home. Sure enough those same shrimp that washed in with the incoming tide near the inlet had the jacks going crazy! A few casts later Rodney completed the slam and Luke got on some decent ones on the fly reel. Over all it was a great night and the guys had a blast. Looking forward to the next one!
