Fly Fishing Palm Beach

A Memorable Fly Fishing Trip March 1st

March 1st 2022 Fly fishing drag burning Jack Crevelle. One of my regulars Bob was booked for the night of the 1st. I have a good spot not too far from the launch that holds big Jack Crevelle (FL record 58lbs) and yes its possible to hook them that big! The bigger they are the smarter they are, and landing one that big would be a feat, but we have definitely hooked a few decent ones on the fly and lost even more! Sometimes if they are being picky or they are laying deeper I will throw an obnoxious top-water lure with no hooks and burn it across the top as fast as I can to see if I can get them fired up. If and when they chase it towards the boat I tell the angler to drop a fly in front of them. Something like a bait and switch! It works sometimes.

Now on the night of March the 1st 2022, this wasn’t the case at all! There was bait that flushed in with the incoming tide from the Palm Beach Inlet and there were Jacks blowing up all over the place! It was basically cast wherever you see them busting and it was an automatic hook up! (See video below)

Now mind you, we had only launched the skiff about 10 minutes before this. I wish I could say this always happens but one thing is for sure, when it does, its a blast! Jacks are real powerhouses and they will have the drags screaming! Even the little 1 or 2lb jacks will have you surprised at their strength! Though they say never to leave fish, we moved on to catching a hand full of Snook and hooking one 30lb Tarpon, which of coarse tossed the hook on the 3rd jump!
